Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a pilgrimage?

A pilgrimage is a spirit led, reflective journey, which allows us to walk in trust and appreciation of what is happening in and around us. By walking with attention to how the stories of this location and the people who live there, connect with our story, we develop a sense of the sacredness of a place and the people.

How is a pilgrimage different from a tour or other travel?

When we travel as a tourist, we learn from the sites and learn the culture of a place, but we hurry through the areas as if they are attractions rather than spots of insight and meaning. As a pilgrim, we open ourselves with an inner space to let the stories and meaning of the sites seep into our being. We study beforehand, pray before and during the travel, and stay aware to what the Spirit is telling or asking us. One can be a tourist on a pilgrimage and a pilgrim on a tour. The attention and space and time given are the internal markers that make the difference.

How do I prepare for a pilgrimage?

Prior to the trip, it is suggested that you read about the history, culture, and geography of the area. Studying religious or spiritual texts as well as writings from spiritual leaders from that land will give you a deeper understanding of how the land speaks to many. Pray for yourself and ask others to pray for you. Keep a journal of questions, hopes and new understandings. Get a passport or check to see if yours is still valid.

What is the itinerary?

Each itinerary and program is designed as a process.  We move from learning about the history, culture and spirituality of the place and people to integrating this to our own stories and to a Greater Universal story.  For example, as we move through the Sinai desert following the ancient Exodus route we hear the stories of Moses and Hagar and may ask what exile may mean for us.  What communities of people around the world are now in exile? How or when does one come out of exile to a new space that offers hope, life and prosperity?   All itineraries incorporate experiential opportunities such as a sacred smudging ceremony in New Mexico or an informal traditional Irish music session. Time is also allowed for rest, guided meditations appropriate to the place and opportunities to engage with the local people in their homes or tents.

What can I expect from Sapira?

Pilgrimages have been planned to allow you entry to many sacred sites and to meet with leaders and native people. Leaders who have traveled in the area, some of whom are very familiar with the landscape, will guide you throughout the journey. The leaders are familiar with the spiritual context of the land and with spiritual formation practices. The leaders will be available as spiritual companions. They are trained in First Aid and CPR and are sensitive to the needs of individuals. All pilgrimages engage expert resources appropriate to the area such as Egyptologists, Native American Elders, Sufi masters, Benedictine monks, scientists and many more valuable contacts.  Travel arrangements have been made for hotels, food, transportation and tips. Pilgrims are responsible for personal expenses.

What does the cost include?

The cost of the journey is all-inclusive (unless otherwise noted in the individual description) for land transportation during the pilgrimage, hotels, meals, entrance into all sites and gratuities. The Egypt journey also includes round-trip airfare.  Not included are personal expenses, camel rides up Mt. Sinai ($10), visas, alcoholic beverages and  single room supplements.  These trips have been designed to make your travel as care-free as possible.

Do I need a passport?

You will need a current valid passport for travel outside of the United States. Visas are required for travel to Egypt and cost $15.00.

Where do we stay?

In Cairo, we will stay in  four or five-star hotels, allowing you the comforts of good rest, showers and evening meals. At St. Catherine's, at the foot of Mt. Sinai, we will stay at the monastery. In the desert, we will camp under the stars. In New Mexico we stay in small hotels, beautiful retreat centers or at monasteries.  In Ireland , the  gracious Glendalough Hotel is one of our main stays along with other charming small hotels.

How do I prepare for the pilgrimage?

As this is an intentional journey, we recommend you prepare by being mindful about this journey. What leads you to this experience? What calls you to a pilgrimage? What is your desire for this trip? Some find writing in a journal helpful as they list questions, insights and hopes: Read books from the suggested reading list. Invite a friend to be a pilgrim partner to pray for you while you are on the pilgrimage. Start walking several times a week so you are accustomed to being on your feet.

What medical information do I need with me?

Carry copies of prescriptions, including for eyeglasses, with you. Fill your prescriptions and bring them along. Your doctor may recommend that you bring an antibiotic as a precaution. As this trip requires walking and travel in the heat, we suggest you check with your doctor ahead of time about any other advice he or she -may offer. Some like to bring a copy of medical insurance information. We also recommend you bring your doctor's name and phone number with you.

What do I need to camp in the desert?

A sleeping bag is necessary, as it will be your mattress on the soft sand. Since the evening in the desert can be cool, you will want to be able to climb in to that bag, as you get chilly. Also sunscreen, flashlight, a small roll of toilet paper and an open heart: You will be treated to the most spectacular view of the stars you have ever imagined, a true 5-billion star hotel!
